[Philippines] FJPI regrets the criminalization of Maria Ressa

JAKARTA | fjpindonesia.com — Chairperson of the Indonesian Women’s Journalists Forum (FJPI), Uni Lubis regrets the criminalization of Maria Ressa, Executive Editor of Rappler.com, an online media from Philippines, who was detained by officers of the National Investigation Bureau (NBI) on Wednesday, February 13, 2019.

Uni, on a press release was published by the FJPI on Thursday, February 14, 2019 in Jakarta office stated that the actions of law enforcers using journalistic articles was published in 2012 showed an authoritarian attitude towards the media that was considered critical of the government.

“Journalism is not a crime. Countries that uphold democracy do not suppress freedom of the press,” said Uni.

Uni said she had coordinated with member of the Press Council Nezar Patria, so that the Press Council could act on the detention of Maria Ressa. “Because this is the criminalization of journalists and journalistic products,” said Uni.

Maria Ressa was arrested for being considered to have defiled the reputation of a businessman, Wilfredo Keng. The name of the entrepreneur was written by Rappler as the owner of an SUV car that was used by former Constitutional Court Judges during the trial indictment process.

Maria Ressa is one of the female journalists who in 2018 was recognized as Person of The Year (POY) of Time Magazine.

FJPI Sesalkan Kriminalisasi Atas Maria Ressa

JAKARTA | fjpindonesia.com – Ketua Umum Forum Jurnalis Perempuan Indonesia (FJPI), Uni Lubis menyesalkan tindakan kriminalisasi atas Maria Ressa, Eksekutif Editor Rappler.com, media daring dari Filipina, yang ditahan oleh petugas Biro Investigasi Nasional (NBI), Rabu, (13/2/2019).

Uni, dalam siaran pers yang dikeluarkan FJPI, Kamis (14/2/2019) di kantor Jakarta menyatakan, tindakan aparat hukum menggunakan artikel jurnalistik yang dipublikasikan tahun 2012 menunjukkan sikap otoriter kekuasaan terhadap media yang dianggap kritis terhadap pemerintah.

“Journalism is not a crime. Negara yang junjung tinggi demokrasi tidak memberangus kemerdekaan pers,” kata Uni.

Uni mengatakan, ia sudah berkoordinasi dengan anggota Dewan Pers Nezar Patria, agar Dewan Pers dapat bersikap atas penahanan Maria Ressa. “Karena ini kriminalisasi jurnalis dan produk jurnalistik”, tegas Uni.

Maria Ressa ditahan karena dianggap telah mencemarkan nama baik seorang pengusaha, Wilfredo Keng. Nama pengusaha itu pernah ditulis oleh Rappler sebagai pemilik mobil SUV yang digunakan oleh mantan Hakim Konstitusi selama proses sidang dakwaan.

Maria Ressa adalah salah satu jurnalis perempuan yang pada tahun 2018 lalu, diakui sebagai Person of The Year (POY) majalah Time. (RILIS)
