[Myanmar] The number of cases under the Telecommunications Law rises to 43 after the amendment

According to the findings of Athan, Freedom of Expression Activist Organization by August 7th, 2018 there have been totally 144 formal cases under the Telecommunications Law. Among them, 9 cases were filed in July, 2018.

Under the previous government, there were 11 cases under the Telecommunications Law. Under the current government, there had been 90 cases before the amendment of the Telecommunications Law and there were 43 cases after the amendment. Among these 43 cases after the amendment, 16 cases were filed by members of parliament and public officials.

There have been 19 complaints filed against 27 journalists under the Telecommunications Law. Since the amendment of Telecommunications Law, there has been no case filed by intermediaries on behalf of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
