In Central Myanmar town of Monywa-based journalist Soe Moe Tun, who worked for the Eleven Media Group, was killed at midnight on 12 December 2016. The Myanmar Journalist Network (MJN) is deeply saddened to learn of this tragedy and our sympathies go out to his family.
Around the world, journalists have become targets — threatened and/or killed by ill-intentioned people and malefactors for exposing the truth to the public. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said that there were 1,225 journalists killed from 1992 to 2016.
Last year, Tin Zaw Oo, the Voice Daily journalist based in Thabeikkyin Township of Mandalay Region was threatened by the (illegal) logging ring. Meanwhile, he and his family moved and hid in other towns.
These incidents highlight the urgency of media houses to take serious actions for the safety of journalists. Also, MJN calls for individual journalists to stay alert (pay special attention to) for personal safety.
MJN also calls for the concerned authorities to put extra effort towards the security of the public. And, to investigate and reveal the truth behind the killing of Soe Moe Tun.
