Novrianto Terok, a journalist from local newspaper Radar Papua, was first hit by a resident while taking pictures of a burning motorcycle being dragged out of a gas station in Manokwari town. The first blow to Novrianto triggered the other residents to join in beating him up.

“When I was hit the first time, I stepped back, but a number of people immediately chased after me. I couldn’t count how many people hit me,” said Novrianto.

Fortunately, Novrianto managed to escape after hitchhiking a motorcycle that happened to pass by. “I immediately reported the case to the police station and my testimony has been recorded.” he said.

Novrianto suffered minor injuries that caused his face to swell and bleeding in his mouth. Radar Papua said they plan to bring Novrianto for a medical check-up on Wednesday.

The Jayapura city branch of the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) condemned the attack, and described the incident as an attempt to obstruct the press work. “AJI encourages the filing of charges against the perpetrators,” said AJI Jayapura advocacy coordinator Fabio Maria Lopes Costa.

He also stated that representatives from AJI Jayapura in Manokwari will advocate this case for authorities to take action. After the incident, AJI together with Radar Papua accompanied the victim to get a medical report at the Naval Hospital (Rumah Sakit Angkatan Laut – RSAL), located about 200 meters from the police station where Novri recorded his testimony.

Separately, the chairman of the Indonesia Journalist Association (Persatuan Wartawan Indonesia – PWI) West Papua, Bustam (no last name), urged the police to immediately arrest the perpetrators and process the case for the attack against Novrianto.

“The act of violence against journalists is against the law and threatens the freedom of the press,” he said.

Bustam said, journalists in their work are protected by the law and should not be obstructed. “Article 8 of the Law No. 40 of 1999 (PressLaw) clearly states that journalists in their profession are entitled to legal protection,” he asserted. “Seizing of reporting equipments and physical attack could be charged under Article 18 of the Press Law, which is punishable by up to 2 years in prison or a fine of Rp 500 million. “

Condemnation also came from the Association of Indonesian Television Journalists (Ikatan Jurnalis Televisi Indonesia – IJTI) West Papua. Chairman of IJTI West Papua, Chanry Andrew Suripatty, said that the beating was very cruel and violated the Press Law.

“Whatever the reason for the violence against press workers who are doing journalism work can never be justified, “said Andrew.

A rider on a motorcycle owned by a taxi service was on its way out from the Sanggeng gas station, when he slipped and fell down. The fall caused the motorcycle to catch fire.

The incident drew the attention of passers-by and riders and caused a traffic jams as other vehicles turned back to avoid the burning motorcycle.

Fortunately, the fire was immediately extinguished by gas station employees. Based on the information from the field, firefighters arrived after the fire was already put out.

“Ketika dipukul pertama kali saya mundur tapi sejumlah orang seketika beramai-ramai mengejar saya.

“Kekerasan terhadap wartawan melanggar UU Pers No 40 tahun 1999.
