[Cambodia] JOINT STATEMENT: CSOs call on authorities to step up the fight against endemic impunity in the country

Since 1994, at least 13 journalists have been murdered: Thou Char Mongkol, Nun Chan, Chan Dara, Thun Bun Ly, Chet Duong Daravuth, Pich Em, Dok Sokhan, Ou Saroeun, Chour Chetharith, Khim Sambo, Hang Serei Oudom, Suon Chan and Taing Try. In all these cases, the victims were killed because of their work. In 11 out of these 13 cases, no one was convicted for the murders; in seven, no suspect was arrested or interrogated.

[Myanmar] Indonesia’s Alliance of Journalists Condemns Jail Sentence of Reuters Reporters

The Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Indonesia has condemned the seven-year jail sentence issued by a Myanmar court against two Reuters journalists Wa Lone (32) and Kyaw Soe Oo (28). The verdict is a serious threat to press freedom, a bad precedent and a major setback for Myanmar’s democracy.

[Myanmar] SEAPA statement on the conviction and 7-year sentence of Reuters journalists

The Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA) denounces in the strongest possible terms the conviction handed down today by a Myanmar court to Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, sentencing them to a seven-year jail term. The baseless conviction of the two brave journalists, using trumped-up evidence provided by police authorities, dealt a fatal blow to press freedom and democracy in Myanmar.

[Cambodia] Drop Fabricated Charges against ‘ADHOC 5’

Cambodian authorities should immediately drop politically motivated bribery charges against five human rights defenders known as the ADHOC 5 (“FreeThe5KH” in social media campaigns), five international organizations said today. The trial of the five – four current and one former senior staff members of the nongovernmental Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (ADHOC) – is scheduled for August 27, 2018, after lying dormant for a year. If convicted, each faces between 5 and 10 years in prison.

[Cambodia] Statement: CCIM calls for a complete drop of all charges against two former RFA reporters

The Cambodian Center for Independent Media (CCIM) welcomes the release on bail of two former reporters of Radio Free Asia (RFA Khmer service), Mr. Oun Chhin and Mr. Yeang Sothearin on August 21, 2018. While CCIM considers this as a positive move, CCIM strongly believes that more could have been done. CCIM therefore would like to calls for a complete drop of all charges against Chhin and Sothearin.
