A reporter for the Cambodia Media Association for Freedom was attacked while taking photos of and covering illegal fishing activities in a commune in Siem Reap on 26 January 2019.
In a phone interview with VOD, journalist Sim Chhivchhean Piseth said that he went to the Beong Pearang community in Chong Khneans commune, Siem Reap province, to report about the illegal forest clearing in the area, which negatively impacts river fishing. He recounted that community leader Kong Mangkul, who was drinking at the time in the area, came to him shouting and egging his companions to attack him. The incident happened around 7 p.m.
Kong Mangkul denied the claim of Piseth, but confirmed that around 10 subordinates did it in revenge for the journalist’s reports about Beong Pearang, according to the VOD report.
Local and provincial police posts have yet to provide information on the case. Meanwhile, there have been no arrests related to the violence.
Piseth plans to file a complaint against Kong Mangkul and his subordinates at the provincial court to find justice.
