CMFR/PHILIPPINES – A day before World Press Freedom Day, celebrated yearly on May 3, two motorcycle-riding men fired at the car of a local radio blocktimer in Sindangan town, Zamboanga del Norte. Zamboanga del Norte is 1066 kilometers south of Manila.
Two armed men fired shots at an Isuzu Crosswind vehicle owned by blocktimer Rogelio Carbo which was parked outside dxSZ 97.7 Charm FM station in Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte. Carbo was anchoring his program, which airs in Charm FM daily from 6:30 am to 8:00 am.
In Philippine broadcast practice, “blocktimers” buy “blocks” of radio or TV airtime for their programs, which they market to sponsors and advertisers.
The police said Carbo had not reported any death threats before the shooting happened. Police are still investigating the incident, but said they are not dismissing the possibility that it was election-related since Carbo has been very vocal about the May 9 local elections in his program.
